Tyrannosaurus Rex is a very famous dinosaur. It was a huge carnivorous or meat-eating dinosaur that lived about 85 million years ago. It was one of the largest and most frightening creatures alive. It weighed about six tons. It was about 40 feet long and 20 feet high, the size of a bus. Tyrannosaurus Rex was a deadly predator. No creature was safe from its enormous teeth and powerful jaws. Most paleontologists used to believe that Tyrannosaurus Rex was the biggest meat-eating dinosaur that ever lived. However, now the fossils of even larger predators have been found. Dinosaurs such as Giganotosaurus and Spinosaurus were even longer and heavier than Tyrannosaurus Rex!

This huge hunter liked to live in hot places. It spent most of its time in forests near the water. This is where most of the herbivores lived, and Tyrannosaurus Rex hunted these dinosaurs for food. A big dinosaur like Tyrannosaurus Rex would have to eat a lot to stay alive. It had a huge mouth and could eat up to 500 pounds of meat and bones in one bite! This fierce predator had two thick and powerful legs with three toes each, like a bird. It was a fast runner even though it was so large. Its bones were hollow, which made it light and fast. Its tail was thin and long and came straight out of its back. Tyrannosaurus Rex kept its tail high off the ground while it walked. The tail was full of muscle and could easily be swung back and forth. The tail was useful for balance and could help the dinosaur to make quick turns while running.

Tyrannosaurus Rex had a big head for its body. It had enormous jaws that were about four feet long and were so powerful that they could easily crunch bone. It had up to 60 long, sharp teeth that were the size of bananas. The teeth were serrated like a saw.  When its teeth became dull, they would simply fall out and others would grow in their place. One Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton was found with teeth as long as 13 inches! But its arms were small compared to the rest of its body. They were only about three feet long. Unlike most of the bipedal dinosaurs, Tyrannosaurus Rex did not use its claws to kill the creatures it hunted. They were only useful for grabbing small things. Tyrannosaurus Rex fossils have been found in Montana, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming in the USA. They have also been found in Canada and Mongolia. The largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton was found in South Dakota, USA. Paleontologists named that dinosaur “Sue”. The name Tyrannosaurus Rex means “tyrant lizard king”.
